A Transformative Gathering: IJSS Conference at Stanford University

The IJSS Transformative Gathering conference at Stanford University marked a vibrant and forward-thinking milestone for the Institute for Jewish Spirituality and Society (IJSS). Departing from the format of our previous, more traditional convenings, this program was intentionally designed to foster active engagement, creative exploration, and collaborative learning.

From the moment participants arrived, the atmosphere was charged with curiosity and purpose. The day unfolded through a series of dynamic sessions that invited deep interaction: rotating small-group discussions, immersive text study drawing from both classical Jewish sources and contemporary educational theory, and hands-on creative exercises that encouraged participants to think expansively and reflectively.

One of the most powerful moments came at the close of the day, when each group synthesized their learning into a unique set of “Ten Rules of Education.” These distilled insights—rooted in spirited dialogue and shared inquiry—offered fresh perspectives on how Jewish ethical and spiritual traditions can inform and enrich modern educational practice.

The conference welcomed a diverse and distinguished group of approximately 35 participants, including graduate students and faculty from Stanford’s Departments of Education, Ecology, and Religion. Joining them were professors and deans from leading rabbinical schools and major universities such as Brandeis, creating a rich tapestry of academic and spiritual voices.

Despite its intimate size, the gathering was remarkably dynamic. It sparked new relationships, deepened existing conversations, and cultivated a strong sense of shared mission among attendees. The collaborative spirit and intellectual generosity on display underscored the potential for Jewish wisdom to contribute meaningfully to contemporary educational challenges and opportunities.

We’re thrilled by the momentum this event has generated and look forward to continuing the dialogue and expanding our community of practice. In the coming days, we’ll be sharing photos and video highlights that capture the spirit and creativity of the day.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in this journey.
