IJSS appoints Ariel Evan Mayse Senior Scholar-In-Residence.

Dear all,

 

The Institute of Jewish Spirituality and Society is delighted to announce the appointment of Ariel Evan Mayse as senior scholar-in-residence. Along with a sense of excitement and commitment to the interface of social justice and Jewish spirituality and theology, Mayse brings a wealth of institutional and academic experience to this new role. We are excited to welcome him to the IJSS leadership team. 

 

Mayse is an assistant professor in the Department of Religious Studies and serves as the rabbi-in-residence at Atiq: Jewish Maker Institute (atiqmakers.org). Previously he was the Director of Jewish Studies and Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Jewish Thought at Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts. Mayse holds a Ph.D. in Jewish Studies from Harvard University and rabbinic ordination from Beit Midrash Har'el in Israel. His most recent publications include Speaking Infinities: God and Language in the Teachings for Rabbi Dov Ber of Mezritsh (University of Pennsylvania, 2020); Hasidism: Writings on Devotion, Community and Life in the Modern World (Brandeis University Press, 2020), edited with Sam Berrin Shonkoff. His forthcoming books include Laws of the Spirit: Ritual, Mysticism, and the Commandments in Early Hasidism (Stanford University Press); and As the Deep River Rises: Judaism, Ecology, and Environmental Ethics (Brandeis University Press). Our programming and strategic vision for the next year will focus on four primary areas of interest and activity: Social Justice and Prison Reform and; Ecology and the Environment; Education; and Mental Health.
